Overview
The Civic Museum of Natural History in Trieste has a rich background as one of the oldest natural history museums in Italy, with a collection of important exhibits unique in the world. As part of a renovation effort, the managing entity, the Municipality of Trieste, invited us to update the museum’s visual identity. Our main focus was to redesign the signage and promotional materials, bringing them in line with the museum’s new contemporary vision.
Visual Identity
For the visual identity, we selected a color palette that is both contemporary and respectful of the museum’s classical context, in order to reflect the identity and character of the museum itself without relying too heavily on conventional design. The use of blue as the primary color reflects Trieste’s maritime identity, while the inclusion of orange pays homage to the wide museum’s coral collection.
To capture the essence of the museum’s scientific content, we chose a modern serif typeface that recalls the typographic conventions of classic scientific texts while maintaining a contemporary feel. Our intention was to honor the museum’s history while demonstrating its modern approach.
